Action Plan

  1. Historical

Please outline below how your school will fulfill the criteria for the historical section of the Blue Star Programme.

St. Oliver’s N.S. Carlingford will fulfill the criteria for the historical section of the Blue Star Programme by completing the following projects:

  •  Senior classes will participate in The Crocus Project and plant yellow crocus bulbs memory of the one and a half million Jewish children and thousands of other children who died in the Holocaust. The yellow flowers recall the yellow Stars of David all Jews were forced to wear under Nazi rule.
  • They will read the Story of Anne Frank in class they will get an opportunity to attend the Anne Frank + You Exhibition.
  • They will create descriptions of Anne Frank using Microsoft Word (see documents below)
  • Junior classes will complete projects on local history.

 2.    Geographical

Please outline below how your school will fulfill the criteria for the geographical section of the Blue Star Programme.

St. Oliver’s N.S. Carlingford will fulfill the criteria for the geographical section of the Blue Star Programme by completing the following projects:

  • Our school has formed a link with Bellevue school in France and the senior classes from both schools will write a minimum of two sets of letters to each other during the course of the year. All the classes in our school will learn about France in class. The highlight of the project will be in May when pupils and teachers from the school in France will visit our school and we will celebrate Europe Day together through music, dance, art and culture.
  • Senior classes will complete a class project on various aspects of Germany including the landmarks, rivers and seas, mountains, cities, people and food. They will then complete online research on a country of interest and complete videos on their chosen countries in groups using Microsoft Photostory.   Travel Show Videos:
  • Junior infants will learn about the types of weather associated with different countries, relating to children in class and countries they come from – ie Spain / Czech Republic. Children will design a flag from their country.

 

 

 3.    Cultural & Creative

Please outline below how your school will carry out the cultural and creative section of the Blue Star Programme focussing in particular on the creative elements of this part of the Programme.

St. Oliver’s N.S. Carlingford will carry out the cultural and creative section of the Blue Star Programme by completing the following projects:

  • All classes will celebrate Ireland during Seachtain na Gaeilge using legends, myths, language and art. Our Lá Glas celebrations will involve the whole school singing Irish songs, playing traditional Irish instruments and performing Irish céilí dances.  All classes will learn the Irish National Anthem.
  • Similarly, the whole school will celebrate being part of Europe during our Europe Day celebrations with Bellevue school from France, where we will exhibit our art work inspired by our work on European artists and perform a wide variety of songs and dances from both countries. All classes will become familiar with the French National Anthem.
  • The senior classes will have the opportunity to take part in a Peace III Cultural Diversity Project in our community involving all the primary schools in the area. They will create a poster on cultural diversity in our community and participate in a football blitz representing Latvia.
  • As part of a scheme of work on Germany 5th and 6th class will research the work on Kandinsky, who studied art in Germany, and Alfred Gockel, a contemporary German artist. They will create their own paintings inspired by these artists.
  • 3rd and 4th class will learn about Henry Matisse and the whole idea of ‘fauvism’ and Claude Monet and impressionist painting. They will also explore the work of Franz Marc while completing a project on Germany.
  • 1st and 2nd class will complete a project on France and will be looking at the culture (songs, customs and food) also at the flag, sport (rugby) and language. Also in art, they will be looking at the French artist Henri Rousseau and focusing on his painting Tiger in a storm.
  • Senior Infants and 1st will also learn about France by comparing the Irish and French flags, designing these for art, food, and learning a few French words.

4.    Institutional

Please outline below how your school will carry out the learning for the institutional section of the Blue Star Programme.

St. Oliver’s N.S. Carlingford will complete the following activies for the institutional section of the Blue Star Programme:

  • We will arrange a visit from MEP Mairead McGuinness, originally from Co. Louth to our school.
  • We will use of variety of online resources to learn about how the EU works and how it impacts on their lives.
  • They will showcase their learning by creating information flyers on the EU using Microsoft Publisher.
  1. 5.    Europe Day Celebrations

Please outline below how your school will celebrate Europe Day and how these celebrations will include the wider school community.

To celebrate Europe Day in our school, pupils and teachers from our link school in France will visit our school and we will celebrate Europe Day together through music, dance, art and culture. We will exhibit our art work inspired by our work on European artists. We will sing Irish songs, play traditional Irish instruments and performing Irish céilí dances for our guests and enjoy a sample of French song and dance from them in return.
